Church History

Celebrating 100 Years!

Our church has a rich history that we are happy to share with you. The year was 1916. Eighteen men and women joined together and under the leadership of the Holy Spirit the First Baptist Church of Eagle Lake was formed. Rev. Barker was the first Pastor. These faithful witnesses met in a little frame school house located on the east side of Eagle Lake. This first church was shared with the Methodist believers in the area. The dwellings of these early Christians  were often crude and their daily lives consited of hard work and simple pleasures. Their rustic homes and simple lifestyles are now a part of our cherished history.

As we seek to preserve that history we are reminded of their unselfish committment to God to be witnesses for Him to the unsaved people of this area. Their devotion and dedication led to the building of a new church in 1926. This church was built on land donated by Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Coburn under the leadership of Rev. R.G. Kelly who was the pastor at the time.

In 1944, under the leadership of Rev. L. O. Calhoun, a mission at Inwood was established and today Inwood Baptist Church is a growing, thriving church. This was our first church "plant" and God has been fatithful to the work located in this community.

In 1954 Dr. R.W. Waterman was called to Eagle Lake. In 1957 a new sanctuary was completed and in 1968 a new education building was dedicated. In 1971 the church called Rev. R.C. Carroll of Tennessee. Under his leadership and the enablement of the Holy Spirit our membership increased due to our outreach and bus ministry. Rev. Carroll served for approximately nine years.

In 1981 Rev. Eddie Smatt of Center Hill Florida was called and under his leadership and God's faithfulness our membership increased. The church sanctuary was redecorated, a bus was purchased and we went on radio and TV. By laws and a church constitution were voted in by the church membership in 1981. Under the leadership of  Rev. Dwain Kitchens, in May 1986, the church voted to relocate the church to land one mile south on Highway 17 on a 14 acre orange grove.  Dr. David Drake was called as pastor on October 8, 1989. Many people sacrificed their time and money to see the building of the new sanctuary we currently have our services in. The AWANA Program for children began and the first service in the new sanctuary was held in October 2001.

Rev. Larry Turner was called as pastor in October of 2002 and the church grew in the richness of God's grace and mercy.  Rev. Jeff Buchanan was called as pastor in November, 2005. The sanctuary was increased and on January 13, 2008 a dedication was made of the Mary Burd Canopy.  A turning lane was also constructed during this time frame to allow ease of traffic onto our campus. Dr. Don Satterwhite  was called as pastor from July, 2011-May, 2015. He and his lovely wife, Marie, brought with them much needed stability and ministry experience to our church family.

God has continued to be faithful to the ministry here at First Baptist Church Eagle Lake. We have seen many people saved and lives changed. The challenge before us is to continue to reach out to the lost and hurting in our community and share God's love. To God be the glory for the great things He has done!

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations," baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," 20 and teaching" them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Mathew 28: 19-20
